Specialized in construction, mechatronics, metallurgy, etc., PTS Schwanenstadt is unique in terms of its 4-phase training model. Students with no specific professional interests apply for a specialized field and formulate their career aspirations in respectively, phase 1 and 2. To complete the following phases, they need to grasp some necessary professional skills and execute a project, which requires professional tools to help them do so.
Polytechnic Study with Essential Tools
CAD software is one of those important tools for students studying polytechnic subjects. To help them become more skillful with CAD software and get well-prepared for their future development, as well as provide in-service programs to the teachers, the school sees ZWSOFT’s offer as their first choice. Currently, 3 teachers and 54 students are using ZWCAD in their lessons in the dual education.
During phase 3, students are guided to grasp the basic commands and the structure of CAD programs. Since it only lasts for a few weeks, what they need are a clear user interface and intuitive commands that reduce learning time while improving teaching quality.
Before the last phase, multiple abilities of students, such as drawing creation and spatial imagination are cultivated, laying the foundation for finishing their projects. Also, students are hence exposed to various industry-specific engineering drawings, enabling them to see their future career and school life more clearly.

Blockbreak can help you conveniently insert a block into an entity. There are two ways to do it with different effects – by Wipeout, the entity will be covered but not broken by the block; while by Break, it will be broken. This new feature particularly benefits electrical and architectural design.
More Accurate PDF Plotting
Raster images, line weights, and line colors can now be plotted more accurately to finer but smaller PDF files, accelerating your plotting process. For example, their plotting scale totally matches the actual size of the paper. What’s more, in a PDF viewer, you can easily find, select and copy the texts in PDF files to quickly acquire the information needed.
Digitally Sign and Validate DWFx Files
Digital signatures can be attached to not only DWG files, but also DWFx ones now. You can also sign them and check the validity of the signatures in batches. Once a DWFx file is digitally signed, it is protected from being copied and modified, ensuring the authenticity of files.

Digital twins enter the mainstream – engineering firms and owner-operators put digital twin aspirations into action
The Year in Infrastructure 2019 Conference – 24 October 2019 – Bentley Systems, Incorporated, the leading global provider of comprehensive software and digital twin cloud services for advancing the design, construction, and operations of infrastructure, today announced new cloud services for infrastructure engineering digital twins. Digital twins are digital representations of physical assets and their engineering information that allow users to understand and model their performance in the real world over their lifecycle. New Digital Twin Cloud Services iTwin Services enable engineering firms to create, visualize and analyze digital twins of infrastructure projects and assets. iTwin Services federate digital engineering content from BIM design tools and multiple data sources, enable “4D visualization” of digital twins, and log engineering changes along a project/asset timeline, to provide an accountable record of who-changed-what-and-when. Engineering teams are using iTwinServices to conduct design reviews, validate design data, and generate design insights. Users of Bentley’s design applications can apply the iTwin Design Review service for ad hoc design reviews, and project teams using ProjectWise can add the iTwin Design Review service to their digital workflows to facilitate overall project digital twins.
PlantSight is an offering jointly developed by Bentley Systems and Siemens, which enables owner-operators and their engineers to create living and evergreen digital twins of operating process plants. PlantSight allows operations, maintenance, and engineering to access trusted, accurate digital twin data immersively, including P&IDs, 3D models, and IoT data. It provides a single view of truth in a validated information model that facilitates situational intelligence, line of sight, and contextual awareness. PlantSightwas jointly developed by Bentley and Siemens using iTwin Services and is commercially available from either company.
iTwin Immersive Asset Service enables owner-operators using AssetWise to align asset performance data and operational analytics in their digital twins’ context, making engineering information accessible to a wider audience of users through immersive and intuitive user experiences. iTwin Immersive Asset Service shows “hotspots” of activity and change in asset status over time which leads to faster and better-informed decision-making that ultimately helps improve asset and network performance.
Digital Twins Enter the Mainstream The ever-evolving physical reality of an as-operated asset has previously been difficult to capture digitally and keep current. In addition, the corresponding engineering information, in its assortment of incompatible file formats and constant change, has typically been “dark data,” essentially unavailable or unusable. With digital twin cloud services, Bentley helps users to create and curate digital twins to improve the operation and maintenance of physical assets, systems, and construction processes, through immersive 4D visualization and analytics visibility.
At Bentley’s Year in Infrastructure 2019 Conference, digital twin advancements featured in 24 finalist projects in 15 categories in project locations across 14 countries ranging from transportation, water networks and treatment plants, to power stations, steel plants, and buildings. Overall, 139 nominations in 17 categories cited digital twin objectives for the innovations used on their projects – a significant increase from 29 such nominations in 2018.
Digital Twin Ideas in Action In the technology keynote at the conference, Keith Bentley was joined on stage by representatives from Sweco and Hatch, showcasing infrastructure digital twin ideas in action.
Sweco digitally integrated a nine-kilometer light rail system project for the city of Bergen in Norway. The extension of the existing system was managed entirely through 3D BIM models, from alternative studies into a detailed engineering design. The use of iTwin Services allowed Sweco to keep track of changes automatically and minimize errors, enabling 4D visualization.
Hatch completed pre-feasibility, feasibility, and detailed engineering for a sulfuric acid facility in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Bentley’s plant design software enabled the project team to design a complete, intelligent digital twin to the most granular level of detail, moving the engineering quality processes upstream as part of the 3D modeling effort compared to traditional drawing-based quality processes. Hatch was able to reduce production ramp-up after hot commissioning, from six months to one week.
Microsoft is prototyping digital twins in its Asia headquarters in Singapore and its Redmond campus. Microsoft’s Real Estate and Security group is implementing an approach for the Digital Building Lifecycle to optimize building performance, cost-effectiveness, employee satisfaction, productivity and security. Microsoft’s efforts to create digital representations of physical assets like buildings are based on Microsoft Azure Digital Twins, an IoT service that helps organizations create comprehensive digital models of physical environments. Azure Digital Twins was released for public preview in 2018 and is now being adopted by Microsoft customers and partners globally, including Bentley for its iTwin Services. The companies are working together to create a digital twin of Microsoft’s new facilities in Singapore.
Digital Twin Ecosystem Both iTwin Services and PlantSight were developed with the iModel.js open-source platform for digital twins, which was first launched in October 2018 and reached its version 1.0 milestone in June 2019. A primary reason for open-sourcing the iModel.js library is to foster an ecosystem of innovation for owners’ and engineers’ digital twin software developers and for digital integrators.
One such ecosystem software developer is vGIS Inc. which used iModel.js to integrate a mixed reality (XR) solution within a transportation infrastructure digital twin. Their mobile mixed reality app visually merges project design models with reality, in the field, in real-time. Users in the field can view subsurface utilities, such as pipes and cables, merged within their real-world orientation. Users simply point at objects with their mobile devices to see project design elements in this context.
Alec Pestov, vGIS founder and CEO, said, “The iModel.js platform is a great resource for developing and integrating value-added tools and services, such as the advanced augmented reality and mixed reality solution offered by vGIS. Digital Twins Defined Digital twins are digital representations of physical assets and systems in the context of their surrounding environment, converged with their engineering information, for understanding and modeling of their performance. Like the real-world assets they represent, digital twins are ever changing. They are continuously updated from multiple sources, including sensors and drones, to represent the right-time status or working condition of real-world, physical infrastructure assets. In effect, digital twins—by combining digital context and digital components with digital chronology—advance BIM and GIS through 4D.
Benefits of Digital Twins Digital twins enable users to visualize the entire asset – in a web browser, on a tablet, or with a mixed reality headset – check status, perform analysis and generate insights in order to predict and optimize asset performance. Users can build digitally before they build physically and plan out and de-risk maintenance activities before they carry them out in the real-world. They now have software at their disposal to envisage hundreds of scenarios, leverage machine learning to compare design alternatives or maintenance strategies and optimize across multiple parameters. Visualization and contextualization of engineering data lead to better informed decision-making and stakeholder engagement throughout the asset lifecycle.

#Have you ever got intimidated when trying to modify details of a complex model after finishing the whole design or based on files from third parties? With Direct Edit in ZW3D, modifying models can no longer be your trouble. Let’s see how.
Traditionally, 3D design is done with parametric modeling, which makes all the model data fully-constrained and synchronized, to meet requirements of industrial production.
However, everything has its pros and cons. In parametric modeling mode, modifying a complex model with hundreds of features and constraint relationships could be a huge challenge. For example, if you want to modify a filet of a part in a model, you need to find the part and its features in the history tree, which can be more annoying if the model is complicated with a long history.
Moreover, to modify a model, you need to have an overall understanding of how the model was built. Otherwise, you will probably break the model when doing the modifications. So it is even more challenging for those who get used to 2D CAD without experience in parametric design, and those who are not the creators of the models.
To solve these problems, the idea of history-free modeling was born, and as a type of this technology, Direct Edit function is also available in ZW3D, enabling you to directly post-edit the model data, instead of editing the features in the history tree. Now, let’s go straight to the key highlights of Direct Edit in ZW3D.
1. History-free post-editing
No matter the model is from other CAD systems or created in ZW3D, no matter it has a history or not, and no matter you want to modify or create geometry on the model, you don’t need to care about the model building process. Direct Edit supports you to directly edit existing 3D models very flexibly.
2. Maintain original constraint relationships
When you modify a model, ZW3D will automatically identify and maintain its existing constraint relationships regardless of whether it has a history of not. For example, the model below does not have a history. When moving the inner hole, its concentric constraint with the outer circle can be automatically identified, so that the outer circle can be moved with it together.
3. Generate new history tree
New history tree will be generated when modifications are added, offering precise engineering data to you to adjust again in parametric mode. Though some mainstream CAD solutions offer Direct Edit functions, ZW3D exclusively retain your modifying process for you. In this way, you could re-edit your modifications via Direct Edit or history tree.
4. Edit model dynamically and intuitively
ZW3D’s Direct Edit offers two ways to modify the features. You can input values in the dialog or directly drag the geometry to acquire the results you need. While you are editing the model, the modifications and relevant constraints will be updated in real-time so that you can preview how you are going to change the model dynamically and intuitively.
5. Diversified editing tools with precise control of dimensions
Direct Edit offers multiple editing tools with precise control of dimensions. You can choose different commands to modify your models, such as DE Move, Align Move Face, Dim Move Face, etc. Moreover, you can enter an exact value in each operation to control your geometric data. In this way, you can flexibly edit models and at the same time ensure the preciseness of modeling.
To summarize, Direct Edit is your ideal helper in complex product design or in team collaboration, which allows you to deal with geometric models more intuitively and flexibly under a complex history or even without a history. What’s more, the combination of parametric modeling and direct editing in ZW3D offers you more flexibilities in post-editing with the bottlenecks of parametric design settled, while at the same time keeps strictness of modeling.

Too many Annotation Scales? Reset at once!

If objects are overlapped with each other, it will be hard to correctly select the one you want. Now it is no longer a trouble – by inputting SELECTIONCYCLING and clicking those overlapped objects, a dialog box called Selection Set will appear, in which they will be listed for you to choose the one you really want.
“Invisible friends” to locate an end point.
Do you still draw a number of auxiliary lines before locating an end point? With the easy-to-use TK Tracking, you can directly get to the point you want with the help of some “virtual” lines, which don’t need to be deleted afterwards. Thus, your drawing efficiency can be greatly improved.

2D CAD Functions
There are always different versions for one drawing, which can be confusing. File Compare can quickly compare and locate the differences between two similar drawings by highlighting them with different colors. Even the most minor differences can be spotted. You can also check the details of modifications in the output file.
For those of you who don’t like keyboards, this function will make you WOW. You can trigger commands by moving your mouse on a certain track, and customize mouse gestures for different commands. It’s especially convenient for your frequently-used commands, notably accelerating your design process.
Do you always expect to select all of a specific kind of objects instantly? It’s not a daydream. With Smart Select, you are able to quickly find similar objects with simple properties selection including object type, color, layer, linetype, etc. For example, all “Green” objects in “Wall” layer can be selected in a second.
Sometimes you may want two different entities to share the same properties. You know what, it can be done so easily by Match Property, which helps copy specific properties of one entity to another by a few clicks. More handily, the properties can even be applied to an entity in a different drawing.

3D CAD/CAM Functions
Customizable Mouse Control
You may have already cultivated your habits of mouse operation. Keep those habits by customizing the mouse settings! Through selecting function key and mouse button, you can choose how to conduct pan/rotation/zoom. For example, you can slide mouse wheel forward to zoom in and backward to zoom out, and reverse the zoom direction.
When there is frequent interaction with up-and-downstream suppliers who use different software, Multi-Export can help a lot. You can export multiple objects to multiple formats at the same time, accelerating your exporting process and making your collaboration more efficient.
Creating 2D drafts can be very time-consuming. In the upcoming ZW3D 2020, Auto Drafting will be available to support creating 2D drawings to demonstrate the three views of an assembly as well as of every part of it in seconds, largely saving your time.
Smart Region Analysis in Mold
When handling region analysis, the regions which are not connected with each other can be detected intelligently, helping you repair the non-adjacent region quickly and thus bringing correct region analysis result.
It’s always complicated when doing CAM programming for models with many holes. I have to recommend the Hole Tactic to you, which can automatically recognize hole features of 2-5 axis and generate drilling tool paths, saving programming time by 70%-90%.

Many tools for standard parts have been added, such as Positive Screw, Locating Rings, Wedge Lock, Spring and so on, enabling you to insert and modify positive screws, locating rings, sprue bush, wedge locks, springs, etc. with ease, and thus speeding up your mold design.
Auto Mold Drafting
Similar to Auto Drafting mentioned in CAD module, Auto Mold Drafting allows you to create mold drafts in batches. Mold types can be recognized automatically for you to filter and select easily, and various drafting templates can be applied to different mold types. In this way, your time spent in creating 2D drawings for multiple mold components can be greatly saved.
Updated Electrode Module
The Electrode module of ZW3D 2020 has also been updated, making the EDM (Electrode Discharge Machining) design a much easier job. For example, you can create multiple Electrode Blanks in Batches, use Dynamic Circle to help you quickly judge whether to insert an electrode at a specific location, generate a Bill of Electrodes, assign Electrode Attribute to non-electrode objects, engrave text on electrodes, etc.
